Written in 1963, Marat/Sade (full title: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade) paints a critical picture of the French Revolution through the eyes of eccentric nobleman, sexual deviant and writer, the Marquis de Sade.
Using a play-within-a-play structure based in historical fact, Marat/Sade is set in the Charenton Asylum, where, as an inmate, the Marquis was permitted to write and mount dramatic works using his fellow inmates as actors, and to perform these works before audiences of French aristocrats (us). We are invited to witness the premiere of de Sade’s latest work: a dramatization of the assassination of writer and revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat at the hand of the young idealist Charlotte Corday.
Marat/Sade is now on stage until July 24 at the Soup Can Theatre! I saw the play last night, and it was AMAZING, two more days left, go see it now!
